What is a bund?

A bund is classed as a ‘secondary containment system’ which is vital for containing oil leaks and spills. Bunding, also called a bund wall, constructed retaining wall around storage "where potentially polluting substances are handled, processed or stored, for the purposes of containing any unintended escape of material from that area until such time as a remedial action can be taken”. They must have the capacity to catch spillages and leaks from their primary container. A bund should be able to contain up to 110% of spillages and leaks. They usually consist of metal or concrete.

Bunding and Legal Requirements

The Control of Pollution Regulations (2001) requires that ‘the bund and the base of the storage area must be impermeable to water and oil and must remain so with correct bund maintenance.
