Case Study: Multiple Interceptor Inspections, Servicing, and Maintenance Across a Large University Campus

Client: University of Birmingham
Sector: Education / Estates Management

Task

Working in collaboration with the University of Birmingham Estates Team, the objective was to carry out a comprehensive survey and inspection of all interceptor systems across the campus. The project required the creation of a detailed asset register and condition report to support ongoing compliance and maintenance planning. Following the completion of the survey, the scope also included the servicing and cleaning of identified interceptors in line with best practice and environmental regulations.

Solution

To deliver the project efficiently across a large and complex estate, a structured and phased approach was adopted:

Comprehensive Site Audit
Our team undertook a full on-site audit of the University campus, identifying all interceptor assets, including petrol, oil, and full retention interceptors. Each unit was assessed to determine its type, capacity, accessibility, and overall condition. GPS technology was used to accurately log locations and access points.

Detailed Inspections
Each interceptor was inspected for liquid and sludge levels, and evidence of hydrocarbon contamination. The inspections also considered any immediate or potential issues that could impact performance or regulatory compliance.

Reporting and Asset Register Creation
All findings were compiled into a photographic report with location maps and an asset register. The report included condition ratings, highlighted any issues, and provided recommendations for servicing and future maintenance, designed to fit smoothly into the University’s existing records

Planned Servicing and Cleaning Works
Following submission of the report, our team worked closely with the Estates Team to develop a servicing and cleaning schedule. By reviewing building usage and occupancy patterns, works were planned to minimise disruption to staff, students, and ongoing university operations.

Outcome

A complete and accurate interceptor asset register was delivered, including client reference numbers, mapped locations, condition assessments, and recommended service frequencies.

Interceptors were cleaned and serviced in line with environmental best practice, ensuring continued performance and compliance.
