PPE for Handling Chemicals
Working with Industrial cleaning and chemical waste removal services can offer many hazards by exposing workers to corrosive and toxic chemicals. That is why the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is so important.
What is PPE?
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as its own name says, is made to protect against hazards that the workplace environment offers, and they can vary accordingly to the type of chemicals and hazards presented. For better protection and security, all PPE have to carry a CE mark and have international standards. Remember that no single piece will cover all hazards, but a combination of them together with other protection controls will do a way better job.
They can be divided into four different categories, where the first and highest one (Level A) provides the highest level of skin, eye, respiratory and mucous membrane protection. With equipment such as chemical protective suits, resistant gloves and boots, breathing apparatus and more. The lowest level for its time (Level D) has the minimum standard of them all and their equipment is based on coveralls, safety gloves and footwear.
What Risks Can PPE Prevent?
The risks of contamination can vary from immediate risks to long-term ones, where all personal protective equipment’s are made for specific conditions and uses, helping to avoid contamination when properly used. For this, is essential that training, supervision, and informational content such as labelling with warnings are provided for all workers.
There are a few ways of getting contaminated, depending on the product and chemical used, such as by inhalation of vapour or gases, dust or even ingestion, while the most common chemicals are paints, batteries, pesticides and building products.
The hazards and dangers from immediate risks include burning, blistering, redness, itching and headache, while the long-term risks can include damage to the nervous and immune systems or even cancer.
